People have a strange way of dealing with psychology. Although it has been a well documented and respected field of medicine for years, there are many people out there who still feel that it has no place in everyday lives. They look at extreme mental problems and feel like psychology should be there for them, but that it has no place in helping people who are apparently completely normal. This leads to people being surprised that there is a psychological department in a hospital, since there are psychiatric hospitals where they feel that those doctors should be practicing in. It’s also sadly common to see people reacting badly when this kind of specialists approaches them to check up on them after an accident or a traumatic event.
The truth is people would never think twice to recommend that someone who has been in a traumatic event like a shooting or a hostage situation seeks psychiatric help. What people don’t realize is that being in a car crash can be equally traumatic, maybe not with the same intensity, of course. But an experience such as that can still deeply affect the way you live your everyday life, and as such you may need counseling to effectively put it behind you.
